On the Sunday of SPX, I took a long-awaited trip to the Smithsonian to see the Coelacanths on loan from an African museum. When I finally found it, it was even more amazing in person. Even dead, these fish are magnificent. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to swim with one, alive and fully blue. Standing there in front of it, I had to fight back tears. Here are the pictures I drew while admiring it.
My only gripe is how poorly the coelacanth was displayed. I could not find it even after walking the whole of the Ocean Hall. The front desk had no clue that it existed either. I finally found it on the way out of the Ocean Hall. It was unlit and very hard to see. People kept walking by it until I pulled out my sketchbook to draw. The baby was gone, so I wonder if they are planning on shipping it back soon. I do hope that it is placed in a more prominent display so that others can admire the wonder that is the coelacanth.

I drew these on the ride over to the museum. Can you tell I was excited?
